Kaye Redfield Jamison Lessons On Life

kayeThere are many who work to support and teach those of us living with a mental illness. Kaye Redfield Jamison is one of the most noted scholars who has opened up to doors to create knowledge and hope for mood disorders. Her book An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness took readers into her brave struggle to face these issues.

I want to share a quote from one of the sharpest minds ever to discuss these topics. She says “We all build internal sea walls to keep at bay the sadnesses of life and the often overwhelming forces within our minds. In whatever way we do this–through love, work, family, faith, friends, denial, alcohol, drugs or medication, we build these walls, stone by stone, over a lifetime”.

This was from her memoir and I encourage you to read this fascinating book. Even with a severe mental illness, Kaye would go on to touch readers around the world. She has worked as a noted professor of Psychiatry at The John Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her talks have been heard at Harvard, Oxford, and she was chosen by Time Magazine as a “Hero of Medicine”.

She has written books that will educate, inform and uplift anyone wanting to understand more about depression, bipolar, suicide and a hope for those impacted. You may find many of her writings at:
