I started BipolarOnline.com with the goal of helping families and individuals dealing with bipolar disorder. I’m dedicated to help because I live with bipolar myself. I was diagnosed at age 15 and faced five psychiatric hospitalizations. I was very sick with hallucinations, delusions and paranoia. A top doctor told my family to expect me to live in a permanent group home or psychiatric hospital. My mom and family would not accept this. My mother read every book, article and spoke to many doctors.
She finally found a psychiatrist who believed there was a chance to have me rebuild my life. I began a new dosage of medication and in two weeks I came out of the mania. I realized that I had lost my friends, freedom and all the goals I had been working on. I prayed and asked God for another chance. I decided to take slow and steady steps to rebuild my life. I slowly went back and finished high school. I then went to college starting part time. I eventually finished college. My mom decided to get her Masters Degree in Social Work and I decided to try to get my Masters as well. I completed the program and worked helping those with mental illness in a hospital, rehab and youth center.
After finishing school I have worked in private practice helping those with bipolar, depression, schizophrenia, addictions and many others. I have educated about bipolar on Oprah.com, CNN, Life And Style, BP Magazine and on many radio shows. Dr. Drew Pinsky and I did a 50 city media tour educating college students about bipolar disorder. I proposed to my wife live on The Dr. Phil Show. We’ve been happily married for 8 years and have two beautiful children.
I was honored to be asked to share my story and lessons about bipolar in the book Beating Bipolar published by Hay House in 2012. I have traveled to speak at local chapters of NAMI and DBSA in Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Napa Valley, San Diego, Pasadena, Glendale, Los Angeles, and will be going to Alabama this summer.
I believe God allowed me to fully recover so I could share my story of hope with others. During the years I was in the hospital I felt alone, lost and hopeless. I wished there was someone I could talk to or look up to who overcame this illness. I now try to be that person for the families and clients I work with.
